The Green Transport Challenge Pack 2008


The Challenge (2008)

Gloucestershire has an exceptional Green Transport Network.

Experience a day of green travel in Gloucestershire – reaching its border(s). Travel by foot, bus, train, bike, boat, or other “green” methods.

Preferably travel in a (small) group, sharing you discoveries as you go. Encourage friends and colleagues to sponsor you so as to help your local charity.

Score points to earn up to 5 stars.

Visit checkpoints to get your challenge card rubber-stamped.

Make a record of your journey, sketching a map of your route with times and evidence (tickets, timetables, photos etc).

At the end of your itinerary, total up your points using the simple score card.

Claim your certificate – at the finale event or from the Cheltenham Rendezvous shop.

3.   Strengthen your local charity: Global Footsteps’ promotion of Green life-  
      styles and help fund the way to a sustainable future.


What to do

  • Fill in your details on the application form.
  • Bring it or Post it to the Rendezvous shop with your entry fee to get your  Challenge Pack & sponsorship forms.
  • Choose your route and sign up your sponsors.

All entrants are encouraged to seek sponsors


Assessing your Success

You will amass points by relying on a variety of modes of travel and reaching certain checkpoints, e.g.

  • Walk one mile (minimum)
  • Cycle one mile (minimum)
  • Travel 1 miles (or more) miles by bus and train
  • Travel 1 (or more) miles by boat.
  • Reach the county border somewhere.
  • Visit a checkpoint
  • make use of a national footpath/cycleway


Scores & Standards

20-39  =   Green Novice                                  *

40-59   =   Green Apprentice                         **

60-79   =   Green Advocate                           ***

80-119 =   Green Expert                                ****

120+   =   Green Guru                                    *****

Senior Green Challenger

Any entrant who holds a senior bus pass gets double points for the asterisked score items and qualifies for the additional certificate ‘Senior Green Challenger’


WHAT TO DO

(EG group or family  from <st1:placew:ston>Cheltenham)

[EG an individual wanting to join in with a group:  Contact Rendezvous with your application form  specifying that you prefer to join a group for the challenge. Rendezvous will have a list of contacts to help put you in touch with a choice of groups]

Preparation:               - Sign up for the Challenge

                                    - A) lead your own group, or B) sign up with one of the groups.


- [with your group] Plan your route using the Challenge Pack provided, or ask your group leader to explain his preferred route]


Before the day:           - Arrange with group leader where to meet at the start of  the  challenge 

- Buy tickets/travel passes- if this gives you a concession

- Make your picnic lunch or plan to lunch at a café on your journey


On the Day:                 - Listen to the local radio travel news to check travel & weather conditions

                                    -Meet up with your group

-  Travel by as many of the designated means of transport in order to score points

-  Score bonus points by reaching a checkpoint (and getting a Global Footsteps stamp, reach the county boundary, avoid use of a car

-  Complete your itinerary- and aim to meet up at the finale event at 7pm at Gloucester Docks

-Fill out your score card, total your points and submit it to the Global Footsteps team for verification. You will then be issued with the appropriate GLOBAL FOOTSTEPS Gloucestershire GREEN CHALLENGE CERTIFICATE
